Opening of a new molecular biology laboratory in Bouaké

On 19 June 2023, the opening of a new molecular biology laboratory at the CHU in Bouaké, Côte d’Ivoire, took place together with representatives of the HIOH and the RKI.

The Helmholtz Institute for One Health (HIOH) and the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) have established a new training and research laboratory at the Centre Hôspitalier et Universitaire de Bouaké (CHU Bouaké, Côte d’Ivoire). The building was funded by the Global Health Protection Programme of the German Federal Ministry of Health. The molecular biology laboratory was opened on 19 June 2023 by the Ivorian Minister of Health and local representatives, together with representatives of the RKI and HIOH. The laboratory is to become a center for teaching modern molecular diagnostics and state-of-the-art sequencing technology in Côte d'Ivoire.

The opening ceremony also represented the kick-off meeting of the BMG-funded PAcCI project to strengthen diagnostics, including genomic surveillance. The 3-year project aims to strengthen public health capacity in Côte d'Ivoire at local and national levels by expanding the existing partnership between the Centre Hôspitalier et Universitaire de Bouaké (CHUB), the Robert Koch Institute and the Helmholtz Institute for One Health. The overall goal of the project is to further strengthen national capacities for infectious disease surveillance and prevention and disseminate this knowledge throughout the West African region.
